Key points of field cultivation of Red Lady Papaya

  • The optimal growing temperature is 22-26°C. Sunlight does not affect flowering; the plant prefers sunny and warm conditions.
  • The first 6 months after transplanting are the early stage of field management, with a focus on nitrogen fertilizer. During the high-temperature period, flowering and fruiting begin approximately 4-5 months after transplanting.
  • Six months after transplanting, or after flowering, top-dress with a focus on potassium fertilizer, ideally every 20-30 days. Foliar fertilizer can also be added during this period.
  • Papaya is a shallow-rooted plant. Please note that the soil needs to be well-drained, and the plant is not drought-tolerant.
  • During typhoon season, tree trunks are prone to breaking. It is advisable to erect supports to protect them from the wind.
  • Red Lady Papaya is a variety resistant to ring spot virus, but precautions should be taken against spider mites hiding under the leaves. During hot and rainy seasons, be aware of snails and ants.

Red Papaya Harvest

  • Each plant can produce 35-50 fruits.
  • The fruit is oblong and hermaphroditic, weighing approximately 1.3-2 kg, with a maximum yield of 3 kg during peak season.
  • At optimal temperatures, the flesh is orange-red (it turns pale red at lower temperatures).
  • Papayas are ready to be harvested when they have 3-4 yellow stripes on their surface, or when the surface is entirely yellow; their sweetness can reach 13%. Green papayas can be harvested once the fruit has fully developed.
